Antenatal Classes are set up to educate expectant Mum’s and Dad’s on a number of topics, covering 3 main topics of Labour, Feeding & Care at Home.
Labour
- signs of going into labour,
- what happens during labour & birth,
- how to cope with Labour,
- information explaining the different types of pain relief
- different forms of exercise, to keep you fit during pregnancy and help during labour
Feeding
- understand the advantages and disadvantages of both breast feeding & bottle feeding,
- explain the technique of how to breast feed,
Care at home
- learn basic baby care,
- such as changing a nappy,
- bathing a baby,
- potential problems that may arise when caring for a new baby
There are a number of free antenatal classes run by the NHS, which take place in a hospital or Health centre, and is usually run by Midwifes, or Health Visitors.
You can also attend private antenatal classes, often held in a community setting, or held at someone’s house. The groups are often quite small, focusing on friendship and support, normally run by teachers who have been trained by the organisation offering the classes, and therefore not necessarily a health professional. An example of this would be the National Childbirth Trust (NCT)
