It is never too early to start reading books to your baby. By
sharing a book
with your baby, is a great way to develop communication, talking, listening,
concentration, and general motor skills. It will also help them to read when
they get older.
Story time is a fun way to interact with your baby/toddler.
With books available in soft material, board books, to paper books, depending on
the age of your baby / toddler. The soft material books are great for your baby
to touch and feel different textures, and to learn to turn over the pages. The
board books, are very strong and versatile, and can be in the form of a ‘pop up’
book, or ‘flaps’ for your baby to lift up and see what is underneath. Whatever
age, there is something that will interest your baby. The NCH, Sure Start and
Libraries, are a few places that do Story times, for babies and toddlers. By
going to one of these activity classes, your baby/toddler looks forward to a
story being read to them, in a fun way, and concentrates to listen to the story,
and to look at the pictures.
Libraries, welcome babies/toddlers. You can join from birth,
and they are held on a weekly basis – story time sessions, at your local
library. You can borrow books, and need not worry if the pages accidentally get
damaged, as they understand that this is likely to happen. All they ask is that
you let them know, and do not try to fix the damaged book, as they prefer to do
this themselves!
